The Mortal Kombat franchise is like a friggin' juggernaut...it just
keeps on moving along with no end in sight and seemingly not a damn
thing that can stop it.  The first MK broke all the rules for a fighting
game.  It featured original character designs, smooth movement and
control (for its time), awesome finishing moves and the
kicker...bucket-loads of blood!  The game was so graphic for its time
that when it was released on the Super NES system, Nintendo insisted
that the blood be colored green (!) and that some of the ending
fatalities be altered a bit.  It was one of biggest "wussy" moves of all
time and only served to give the game even more publicity.  Hell, the MK
series is probably one of the major reasons games now carry a rating
system in the US.  Unfreakingbelievable. 

Unfortunately as the series progressed, there was very little new value
added as far as innovative new features...mostly just new characters and
background storylines...yawn...   

Well, MK4 has now arrived and looks to try and breathe a bit of life
into the somewhat stale series.  The look is certainly new, an
innovative Z-axis (side-step) move has been implemented and a few other
new features have been added to try and spice the old boy up a bit.

Does the new game succeed in reviving a tired old broken down, albeit
still very popular series?  You actually think I'm gonna tell you right
here?  No way champ, you're just going to have to read the review to

It's hard to actually critique a game as seminal as the original Metal Slug--it's one of the best side-scrolling shooters ever made. That sort of sums up the review right there. Just know that there's a reason this series is spoken of in hushed, reverent tones, and that reason starts with this game.

Premise:
Morden's a madman bent on world domination. Marco and Tarma are two bad-ass soldiers out to bring his reign of terror to an end. Armed with a bevy of rotating weapons, they'll track Morden through six levels of scrolling action goodness, mowing down his army all the way, aided and abetted by the powerful tank named Metal Slug.

Gameplay & Control: 8/10
The controls are comfortably complex--8-way joystick movement combined with jump, shoot, and bomb. Rotating a turret while moving takes some practice, but once you get it down, it's no problem. The gameplay's a bit more straightforward--blow everything away, rescue POW hostages, and collect power-ups as you find them. It's a gleeful, old-school action game. In fact, for both gameplay and control, it's mostly standard stuff, just wonderfully executed.

Graphics: 9/10
This would be considered a classic even if it didn't have the excellent gameplay--Metal Slug's visual style is one of the reasons it's so beloved. The cartoonish, exaggerated expressions of the characters and the oddly bulbous war machines give Metal Slug a unique look. You'll see some slapstick humor too, something most genre entries don't offer. There's a bit of slowdown here and there but only when the screen is filled with several sprites, such as explosions or swarms or enemies. It's quite manageable.  You'll spot nice scrolling effects using detailed backgrounds, too.

Sound/Music: 8/10
Heroic and hummable, together at last. The layered, rich soundtrack is brilliant, and it's only tarnished by the sheer repetition of enemy death screams--it's the same "Aaah!" over and over again. If you get used to that, well, no problem.

Replay Value: 8/10
Other Slug games addressed the replay problem with multiple paths and secret areas; in that respect, the original Metal Slug shows its age a bit.  However, several players race to set high scores or fastest times, or see how far they can get trough the game without dying. In other words, the game is so much fun, you'll invent your own reasons to keep playing long after you've "finished."

Overall: 9/10
Coming back to Metal Slug feels like returning to visit an old friend--it's just as good as you remember it no matter how long it's been since you last saw each other. Metal Slug is not only an insane amount of fun--it's also one of the best games to illustrate the genre, and among the best titles on the Neo, period.

Angry Birds The Year of Dragon

                               
Can't get enough Angry Birds? Wish you could hurl disgruntled fowl at thieving piggies while simultaneously celebrating international holidays?

Well you're in luck, because Rovio Mobile has bundled the iconic images of numerous yearly hols - from Halloween to Christmas - into a bonus batch of Angry Birds levels.

The latest update celebrates the Chinese New Year, where more than one billion people get the date shockingly wrong. Rovio has decked out 15 levels with Chinese symbols like fireworks (that spiral off and explode when hit), lanterns, and pigs in fetching rice hats.

You also get access to the destructive Mighty Eagle - now Mighty Dragon, fittingly enough - for free and a good old Golden Egg. Read on for clues to beating every level, making use of the dragon, and finding that pesky egg.



The Mighty Eagle usually costs you 69p / 99c, but its Chinese New Year counterpart - the fearsome Mighty Dragon - is given away free with this pack of 15 stages. There are two ways to use it.

The Dragon can help you skip levels by essentially dropping into the level and wiping out nearly everything on-screen. This is really helpful if you're stuck on a level, but there are two caveats: your shameful skipping shows up on the level screen, and you can only call the Dragon once per hour.

Top tip: Set Angry Birds Seasons to send push notifications (go to the main 'Settings' app of your iOS device, under 'Notifications'. Let the game send you alerts, even on the Lock screen) and the game will alert you when the Dragon is available.

The Dragon will also show up when you complete a stage and go back in. This offers up a second way to play: how much of the level can you destroy with the Dragon? Use the birds to smash away as much debris as possible, then tap the eye icon in the top left.

Your catapult will have a fish token in it. Fire it into the middle of the stage and the Dragon will swoop in and cause chaos. You'll be graded on how much destruction you cause. If you earn a perfect score (a.k.a. 100 per cent), a fish icon appears on the level select.



Knowing exactly where to place a bird, or which TNT boxes to weed out, or which order to take out the pigs, is no easy task. Luckily, there are some ninja-like 'Birds fans who know the secrets to getting three stars.

There's only one Golden Egg to hunt down in Year of the Dragon. It's in the final stage, though, so you'll need to work hard to get it. Once it's yours, an egg will appear on the screen to the right of this season's level list. Tap it to play a fun bonus level.



Golden Egg 1 (Level 1-15)

The Golden Egg is easily visible. It's on display, right beneath the catapult platform. Problem is that the floating rock which holds your bird-flinger is so big it stops you from getting a good shot. We need to take a different approach.

Fire a bird (the huge, red Big Brother birds are bounciest) at the left-most part of the pigs' fortress, so it rebounds off and bounces into the egg. It will take a few goes to get it, but you've got three different birds to try with each time.

It will, more likely than not, take a number of goes to get this right. It's perhaps more luck than skill, but keep at it and the egg will be yours eventually.



Golden Egg 2

To get this egg, you'll need to earn three stars on all stages in the Year of the Dragon theme for Angry Birds Seasons.
